Courses and Programs
The Construction Craft Worker Regional Training Centre (CCWRTC) Southwest Region is a fully equipped training facility where various types of education and training courses and programs are delivered. These programs range from pre-apprenticeship training, apprenticeship training, construction skills upgrading, health and safety training, and GED Assessments and Preparation (Grade 12 Equivalency).
*Programs are comprised of a number of courses. In order to successfully complete a program all courses must be passed.
1. Construction Craft Worker Pre-Apprenticeship Program (Pre-Employment)
Construction Craft Worker (CCW) Pre-Apprenticeship is a ten-week program where successful participants learn entry-level skills so that they can apprentice as a CCW. Upon successful completion of the program and availability of work, participants are placed with an Employer on a paid probationary work period in one of the following sectors: Curb, Gutters and Sidewalk; Sewer and Watermain; High Rise and Low Rise Forming; Industrial, Commercial and Institutional; and Masonry. After a successful 90-day probationary work period, participants pay their initiation fee, become members of Local 1059 and are registered as Apprentices with the Local Apprenticeship Committee and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
Classes are usually six hours each day for five days a week for a total of thirty hours a week. Participants must bring their own construction safety boots and hard hats. A minium of grade 10 is required but grade 12 is preferred. HRSD grants may be available for persons who qualify for this course.

2. Construction Craft Worker Apprenticeship Program
A CCW means a worker involved in site preparation, clean-up, material handling, excavation, backfill/compaction and dismantling on and around building, structures or premises. The CCW may also be involved in form setting and stripping, concrete placing and finishing, pipelaying, and mason tendering.
The CCW ApprenticeshipProgram is similar to other apprenticeships in that the apprentice attends two eight week in-school sessions in-between two to three periods of paid work experience lasting approximately ten months each. The apprentice keeps a logbook outlining all of the competencies learned on the job.
The Construction Craft Worker Regional Training Centre (Southwestern Region) is a Training Delivery Agent (TDA) for the CCW Trade. This means that all apprentices from this Local do their two eight week in-school training sessions in London. MTCU charges $400 per apprentice for each eight-week in-school training session. Local 1059 Training Trust Fund pays this fee for each of the apprentices. Apprentices who are Employment Insurance (EI) eligible will continue to collect while they are taking training
The in-school apprenticeship program is the same one used at all other approved TDA's across the province of Ontario and is approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). Courses taught in the sixteen week program (two times eight weeks usually a year apart) include the following:
- Construction Safety I & II
- Blueprints and Specifications I & II
- Construction Tools I & II
- Equipment Handling Practices and Procedures I & II
- Rigging, Hoisting and Material Handling I & II
- Introduction to Formwork I & II
- Introduction to Concrete I & II
- Introduction to Scaffolding I & II
- Earthwork, Barriers and Controls I & II
CCW Apprentices specialize in one of the following sectors:
- Curb, Gutters and Sidewalk
- Sewer and Watermain (Pipelayer)
- High Rise and Low Rise Forming
- Industrial, Commercial and Institutional
- Masonry.
CCW are scheduled for their in-school sessions by the MTCU. All of the courses take place between January and the beginning of May each year.
CCW apprentices get their Certificate of Apprenticeship from MTCU when they have achieved the following:
- successful completion of the two eight week in-school sessions
- successful completion of on-the-job training (2400 hours)
- log book filled out
- Local Apprenticeship Committee signs off (apprentice has met all of the requirements)
- apprentice notifies MTCU that all of the requirements have been met and has documentation to prove this
- CCW Apprentices will get their Certificate of Qualification once the requirements for the certificate of apprenticeship have been fulfilled; as well as successfully completing the Provincial examination (70% pass)
A Cement Finisher (CF) is a person who is able to place, level, finish and cure concrete. Being able to cut concrete, repair and re-surface concrete, perform specialty concrete, and create architectural finishes are all skills a CF must be able to perform.
At Local 1059 the members working in the Curb, Gutter and Sidewalk sector are trained as cement finishers.

- Place and Level Concrete
- Finish Concrete
- Concrete Curing and Protection
- Cut Concrete
- Repair and Resurface
- Specialty Concrete
- Architectural Finisher
- Introduction to Epoxy Systems
CF are scheduled for their in-school sessions by the MTCU. All of the courses take place between January and the beginning of March each year.
CF apprentices get their Certificate of Apprenticeship from MTCU and become CF Journeypersons when they have achieved the following:
- successful completion of the two eight week in-school sessions successful completion of on-the-job training (4800 hours) log book filled out
- Local Apprenticeship Committee signs off (apprentice has met all of the requirements)
- Apprentice notifies MTCU that all of the requirements have been met and has documentation to prove this
4. Safety Courses (Members Only)
Safety courses are offered throughout the year on an as need basis. These courses are free to members of the Local. Those who successfully complete the course will get a certificate from The Construction Safety Association, The Workers Health and Safety Centre, or LIUNA, Local 1059 Training Centre. It is important that you keep up with the certificates required to work in the sector in which you are working. If you do not have the certificates required, you will not be sent to work. If you are interested in taking a course, please call 455-8083 and ask for Dawn or click here and leave an e-mail message stating your name, social insurance number and the safety course you wish to be enrolled in. Your name will be put on a waiting list and you will be contacted when the course is next offered.

5. GED Assessments and Preparation (Grade 12) Equivalency)
For persons wanting to obtain their grade 12 equivalency they should contact Women Immigration of London (WIL) at (519)663-0774. This organization will make arrangements either at our facility at Firestone Boulevard or at another convenient location to assess your level of mathematics and English. After the assessment, you begin the program where you work at your own pace.
Upon completion of the program, arrangements are made for you to write grade 12 equivalency test.
6. Skills Upgrading Courses
On an as need basis, courses are offered from time to time which help our experienced members to upgrade their current skills. For example all LIUNA members now have access to a Blueprint Reading course that can be accessed on line. To register for this training, visit: www.laborerslearn.org
7. Brick and Stone Mason Pre-Apprenticeship
The CCWRTC also offers a 20 week pre-apprenticeship program that teaches participants the skills necessary to prepare them for an entry-level job and apprenticeship in the brick and stone sector. Upon successful completion of the training and the availability of work, students are then placed with masonry contractors for a 30-day probationary period for which they are paid. After this on-the-job experience is complete, successful candidates are then offered membership in the Brick and Allied Craft Union, Local 5, and are also able to register as an Apprentice with the Local Apprenticeship Committee and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. 8. The CCWRTC is a partner with Fanshawe College
in delivering the in-school training requirements for Apprentices registered in the Brick and Stone Mason trade. Basic, Intermediate and Advanced level classes typically run from November to April annually.
