What does a CCW do?
CCW means a worker involved in site preparation, clean-up, material handling, excavation, backfill/compaction, pipelaying and dismantling on and around buildings, structures or premises. A CCW may be involved in form setting and stripping, layout work, concrete placing and finishing, and mason tendering in the following sectors of the construction industry: Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI), High Rise and Low Rise, Curb, Gutters and Sidewalks, Sewer and Watermain, Roads, Bridges, Utilities, and Masonry.
Is the CCW a government recognized trade?
Yes. On June 29, 2001 the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) announced the approval of the Construction Craft Worker (CCW) program. This is a new trade under the Apprenticeship and Certification Act.

Tell me more about the requirements and training?
- The minimum entry requirement is grade 10 but most employers demand grade 12
- on-the job training approximately 1200 to 4000 hours depending on the construction sector (you are paid a percentage of Journeypersons rate during training period)
- in-school training 240 hours - two eight week periods during which you can collect Employment Insurance if you are eligible
How much money can I make as a CCW?
In the London area at the present time (2003) a journeyperson CCW makes approximately $30 per hour including benefits.
How can I become an apprentice with LIUNA Local 1059?
- Fill out an application at 56 Firestone Boulevard
- If you meet certain requirements and there is demand for apprentices, you may be asked to come to an interview and do a practical test
- If you have a successful interview and practical test you may be eligible for a ten week pre-apprenticeship program (usually two programs are run each year)
- There maybe a tuition fee for this program unless you are eligible for a government subsidy
- If you successfully complete the program and have a positive placement with an employer (we place you) you can then join the local after you pay the initiation fee and become a registered apprentice
