News Release: New Coalition forms to sound the alarm on looming job losses
June 14, 2007, London, ON: Responding to the increasing alarm over how decisions, delays and inaction at City Hall will directly affect the availability of local jobs, a group of concerned Londoners officially announced today the formation of the Keep London Growing Coalition. Their message: growth equals jobs.
The Keep London Growing Coalition is a group of concerned construction workers, labour unions, contractors, home builders, business owners, land developers, manufacturers and suppliers and their employees, and residents. The Coalition is concerned that system delays and backlogs at City Hall will lead to thousands of layoffs by this fall.
“First and foremost, people’s livelihoods are at stake,” says Jim MacKinnon, Spokesperson for the Coalition and President of the London District Building and Construction Trades Council. “Members and supporters of the Coalition are all working together for the first time in London’s history to bring awareness to this situation. We all believe that there is a large and very serious problem looming. We ask City Hall to treat this as a very urgent and serious issue. We are asking for their help and support in developing solutions that will keep jobs in London. We are eager to work with them to resolve and address issues that affect tens of thousands of Londoners and their families.”
The Coalition is encouraging members of the community to get involved, learn about the issues and ask the Mayor and Members of City Council what they will do to prevent this situation from occurring. Every taxpayer in London will be affected if immediate actions aren’t taken and tough decisions aren’t made.
